Latest gambit by the religious left to convince Christians to embrace big government is to claim that support for the welfare state is “pro-life” since creating new government programs to spend taxpayers money on pregnant mothers will reduce abortions. In truth, increased welfare spending will harm the economy and further erode the ethics of personal responsibility, and thus likely increase abortions. What Pope John Paul II called “the culture of death” is the child, and ally of, the welfare state and the enemy of the free-market.
