Potter’s Field

The mail carrier just delivered a copy of the latest “Harry Potter” book to one of my daughters who is visiting us. I asked him how many of these books he has delivered this morning, and he said “about 50 on my route, but only 2 on your street. On most streets I’m delivering 4 or 5.”

Not bad for a product whose popularity originated on school playgrounds through kids talking to one another, and without much pre-publication promotion. This has been one of the better examples of how decentralization works.
