Post Office Non-Services

I had to mail a couple of things earlier today but I needed to buy a box. The lady at the counter gave me one and told me, incorrectly, that the box was self-locking and that no tape was needed. While preparing the package I noticed that the box was an ordinary one –I had tape anyway so it wasn’t a big deal. When I told the lady this she said, smiling, “they keep taking and taking. No wonder people don’t use the services as much.”

Yes, it’s easy to pick on the post office because it’s everywhere and thus very popular, yet it remains the quintessential example of government “advances.”
