Pope wrong on drugs and the state

Just goes to show you that he is not infallible on all issues: B16 urges political action against drugs.

But you know what is great about B16? He speaks plainly and clearly. You know precisely what he means, and so, as in this case, you don’t hesitate at all to say: well this is a very bad idea!

A certain preceding pontificate did not have this character. Every statement of this sort was so carefully parsed out, qualified, and hazily phrased, with endless citations of the history of social teaching and the common good etc., that you figured that whatever was being passed on had to be of some grave doctrinal import–when in fact it was just a pastoral opinion.

Up with B16 but down with the drug war.
