My wife Heather commented last night that it just doesn’t seem right to call politically created days off “holidays” being that holiday historically meant a “holy day”. She suggests we call them “polidays”, short for “political days”, instead. This would usefully divide the official U.S. calendar, for example, into two lopsided lists…

Polidays: Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, M.L. King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day

Holidays: Christmas, Easter, St. Valentine’s Day
