Pit Bull Egalitarianism

Would you send your child to a day care center if the proprietor had live alligators running around his back yard? How about rattlesnakes or grizzly bears?

Most people would answer “No, of course not. Besides, government regulators would never license such a day care center.”
Well, not exactly. In today’s Baltimore Sun is an article about an 18-month old boy who was nearly killed by a pit bull in the backyard of his day care center. His mother assumed that since it was a licensed day care center it was safe, and the last thing she ever must have thought of was that there might be man-eating pit bulls roaming the back yard. You might as well have a lake full of alligators back there.

But the center was licensed since “we can’t discriminate aganst any breed of dog, said Pamela Arney, Harford [County’s] animal control officer.”

Just a couple of months ago, a few miles from where this attack occurred, several pit bulls killed a horse and mutilated several others. Only a fool would believe that a government license guarantees product or service safety.
