Our Unnatural ‘Aristocracy’

For years now I’ve watched crowds of thousands spontaneously cheer Ron Paul and chant his name after he merely expresses the same old ideas of liberty that he’s been expressing (as have I and others associated with the Mises Institute and LewRockwell.com) for decades. Millions of people have opened their checkbooks to this man’s campaigns. He gets more contributions from active military people than all other presidential candidates combined. On “The Tonight Show” last week a television star guest of Jay Leno appeared wearing a Ron Paul sweatshirt and stated that he believes “in everything that comes out of his mouth.” Jon Stewart ended a segment of his television show on Comedy Central last week by yelling, “Ron Paul in 2012!” Strangers spend their weekends holding “Ron Paul for President” signs over interstates and at busy intersections motivated by nothing but having heard a Ron speech on YouTube. Thousands of young people, many of whom I have met, have begun educating themselves on their own in Austrian economics and the literature of liberty (see www.mises.org).

By contrast, no one who is not paid to do so cheers for Romney, Gingrich, Bachmann, Santorum, etc., etc. Instead, the “mainstream” media touts their supposed “popularity” with BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS like the one this past weekend that Bob Dole is endorsing Romney. Bob Dole! I can’t imagine anything that would motivate people to vote for Romney more than that, can you?
