Thanks to Mark Fee for the reminder of Operation Praying Mantis, on April 18, 1988. The US attacked the Iranian navy and sank its ships, ostensibly for defensive mining of its waters. In fact, the attack was connected to the US-fomented Iraqi war on Iran. More than a million people were killed on both sides over eight years when the US sent its tool Sadddam Hussein to punish Iran for its disobedience. The Navy attack, and threatened other attacks, pressured Iran to agree to a ceasefire.
