On Nuclear Devastation

There was a time in this country when even the prospect of using nuclear weapons was considered far beyond the bounds of even the cheapest moral standards. I recall a television talk-show in which Phil Donahue and the Soviet journalist, Vladimir Posner, regularly teamed to discuss various topics. I enjoyed these programs – mainly because of Posner’s realpolitick that contrasted with Donahue’s whiney style. On one program, the two were discussing each country’s fear of the other using nuclear weapons. Donahue was puzzled. “Why would the Russian people think that Americans would use nuclear weapons against another country?,” he asked. “Because you’re the only country that has ever done so,” Posner responded.

Hillary Clinton now criticizes Barack Obama for his not embracing Truman’s decision to nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Good grief! Where is Pat Paulson now that we need him?
