On Martial Law and Community Service

When a civil rights group begs for martial law, and service to the state is promoted as a civic virtue, it is timely to ask whether centuries of habit make it difficult to get slavery out of our systems. Ezra Pound’s words are instructive: “A slave is one who waits for someone to come and free him.”
