When Spain’s Juan Samaranch corrupted the Olympics, he did it the old-fashioned way: he bribed corrupt members from corrupt countries — people like himself.
Now, after several face-saving and ineffective “reforms,” the usual suspects want back into the trough. Athletes have long since been relegated to the back seat — they are now merely exploitable resources for the satisfaction of well-situated corruptos. Amateur athletics has been virtually destroyed, so now it’s all about money.
Of course, the Olympics have been transformed into a proven money machine, so what sporting chap wouldn’t try to raid the treasury? When it’s broke, Bernanke and Paulson will undoubtedly bail them out. But look for them to confiscate all the gold medals.1:57 pm on October 21, 2008 Email Christopher Manion
