Obama and the Democrats Win Again

Some Democrats have criticized Obama for compromising and allowing Republicans to tie an increase in the debt limit to spending cuts. But like Obama’s “compromise” on extending the Bush tax cuts, Obama and the Democrats have won again.

The president was likewise criticized by some of his fellow Democrats for compromising on the issue of the Bush tax cuts. But the Democrats were the winners: The tax cuts were extended (that is, taxes were not cut), the estate tax was brought back, the payroll tax was cut (which mainly helps Democratic constituents), and unemployment benefits were extended.

On the debt limit deal, the debt ceiling was raised for certain and future spending cuts were promised, with entitlement programs shielded. What’s not to like if you are a Democrat? Promises, promises, isn’t that all the Republicans ever give us?
