North Korea and U.S. Bases

North Korea¬†is claiming the ability to strike U.S. military bases in Japan. Here is a question that I don’t see being asked: Why does the United States still have military bases in Japan? Japan has the world’s third largest economy and can provide for its own defense. And besides, World War II ended in 1945.
