Nifong resigns as Durham DA — a year too late

The Durham prosecutor who did so much damage to so many lives, Michael B. Nifong, has resigned his post, giving his speech while on the stand at the North Carolina State Bar hearing in which the bar almost surely will revoke his law license.

Furthermore, he was almost surely going to be removed in a subsequent hearing in Judge Orlando Hudson’s court, acting on a removal petition by Beth Brewer. I suspect he will face even more legal problems down the road, and others are going to be in the dock as well.

Thanks to Lew’s generosity with his page, I have been able to write more than 50 articles on this sorry affair — the Duke Lacrosse Case — and to point out from the beginning that there was no crime committed, save those crimes that the police and prosecutor committed. While today is a sad day for a lot of people involved, it would have been even more sad had Nifong been able to obtain a conviction from a Durham jury that was ready to convict despite the massive lack of evidence.I am grateful to Lew for his willingness to take heat from a lot of people for giving me space on his page. Without a forum, I would have been silent, except for driving friends and family nuts in conversation. (I drove them nuts, anyway.)
