Jacob Heilbrunn examines the reemergence of neocons in the Democratic party. Actually, neocons never fully left the party of Truman and Scoop Jackson. While many prominent “right-wing” social democrats defected from the Democratic Party in the 1970s, a few disciples of Harry Truman remained in the Democratic Party. In 1992, a few prominent neocons even endorsed Bill Clinton because of Bush I insufficient commitment to global democracy. If Bush II continues to drop in approval ratings, look for more stories about the revival of the “Truman Democrats,” and how they may hold the key to the Democrats regaining the White House in 2008.
