Neocon slanders conservative icon

In the course of praising Bush and GOP Chair Ken Mehlman for officially abandoning any pretense of support for limited government and property rights in order to pander to the “civil rights” establishment Jack Kemp claims Barry Goldwater voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act for political reasons.

Kemp claims Goldwater’s vote was part of the “southern strategy,” even though the “southern strategy” was created in 1968, and Goldwater’s vote against the act had nothing to do with politics. Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act because he recognized that the act was unconstitutional and would massively expand government and thus contract freedom. Goldwater was far from perfect, but he was a several cuts above the “leadership” of today’s conservative movement who will sacrifice any principle to hold onto power.
