My Dream Personal Protection Arsenal

[Full Disclosure: At the moment, I do not own any firearms. There was a time when I owned six handguns. When the time and place come for me to re-arm, what follows are my 3 choices for my dream arsenal.]

Concealed Carry: Glock G30—You don’t want to be on the receiving end of this 10-round/45-caliber semi-automatic pistol. Of course, the only ammo for me to load it with is Federal Premium’s Hydra-Shok hollow point bullets.

Open Carry: Smith & Wesson Model 586 L-Comp—I’ve always been partial to revolvers because they are mechanically simpler than automatics and, therefore, less prone to a glitch (something you don’t want in the middle of a shoot out!). They are also easier to clean and maintain. This particular gun holds seven rounds of .357 Magnum bullets instead of the customary six rounds. It also has a 3″ barrel, which makes it more manageable to aim and fire than my old S&W 686 4″ .357 Magnum. Again, the only ammo for me is Federal Premium’s Hydra-Shok hollow point bullets.

Longarm: Benelli M2 Tactical—I’ve never owned, nor even shot, a rifle or shotgun. A former co-worker of mine (who actually has an FFL) recommended very strongly to me that this is one of the best shotguns to buy for personal protection.

Because I am a mere amateur when it comes to firearms in comparison with the LRC blog’s resident Gun Goddess—Karen De Coster—I would like to impart a particular philosophy which I was told by my friend who is a gun aficionado (and was the one who introduced me to the world of firearms): “Beware the man with one gun.” In other words, for the vast majority of gun owners who are not the De Costers and the Ayoobs of the world, it is better to know how to use and maintain one gun that you are comfortable with rather than stockpiling an arsenal with which you only have a surface knowledge of the individual firearms which make up that arsenal.
