I just heard John Boehner in a news report say something like: “The state can’t compel Americans under the Constitution to buy health insurance.” But according to Boehner and the Republicans, the state can compel Americans under the Constitution to save for retirement (Social Security) and pay for other Americans’ health care (Medicare, SCHIP, Medicaid). The state can in fact compel Americans under the Constitution to do or not do just about anything Congress and the agencies it creates feel like mandating or prohibiting. If you see Boehner, ask him if I can opt out of Social Security and Medicare.
John Boehner is no role model for Republicans.
