We always hear how important it is to strengthen science and promote innovation through federal funding of R&D. (This is of course nonsense as true economic and technological advances come most efficiently from a free market, not from a centrally-planned science program.)
But, I wonder how many proponents of science funding realize what an overwhelming role the military plays, especially in the post-Manhattan Project age.
