I have watched the video of the Friday evening news conference by attorneys for the Duke lacrosse players, and all I can say is they are genuinely angry at the criminality demonstrated by DA Mike Nifong. (The video can be seen on this link.)

Not only did the DA withhold what almost certainly will be considered to be exculpatory evidence, but when he released the “new” DNA evidence, he did so after 5 p.m. on Friday so that it would miss the news cycle.

For example, the New York Times had the story buried well back in its sports page, an Associated Press article that ran 257 words. This from a newspaper that has trumpeted every other press release from the DA as an oracle of the gods. Likewise, publications like Newsweek have been nothing more than PR organs for Nifong and his ilk.

However, a real story, one that contradicts the prosecutor, is buried where no one will read it. That should tell you everything we need to know about the vaunted “free press” of this country.
