David: The story of Thompson’s halting of the My Lai massacre goes further than that. After he landed his helicopter, Thompson told the Vietnamese civilians to come away from where this was taking place, then ordered his helicopter gunnery chief to open fire on any American soldiers who continued to shoot at the unarmed civilians. There are some people who have been able to think beyond the slogan “my country, right or wrong!”
