These two blogs on grammar reminded me of the works of one of my cultural heroes, the late Richard Mitchell. In his books Less Than Words Can Say, and The Graves of Academe, Mitchell brought together many of the works he had published in a wonderful newsletter “The Underground Grammarian.” He was comfortable to read, much like H.L. Mencken, and those interested in reading of his running battles with government schools will be treated. Sadly, Mitchell died in December, 2002, but his works can be found online: just Google “the underground grammarian” and see what comes up.
