More on Catholics and War

An email correspondent writes:

“Yes, we’ve been witnessing ‘governmental stupidity of truly historic
proportions.’ I like the way you put things. And while I don’t (yet?)
share your faith, I too am baffled by traditional Catholic support for Bush
and the war. You would think people who can see that not everything the
Pope does is necessarily wonderful would apply at least as much discernment
to the U.S. president. Do you suppose some traditionalists are so used to
disagreeing with the Pope that they automatically assume anything he says is
‘liberal’ and so they must be on the other, ‘conservative’ side? Even as a
non-Catholic I would trust the Pope over Bush in a heartbeat. I don’t know
if you ever read the ‘Free’ ‘Republic’ Religion forum, but there is a former
seminarian who attends SSPX masses whose persistent defenses of the
traditionalist position (against overwhelming neo-Catholic opposition) are
eloquent and scholarly, but when it comes to politics he is a total Bush
loyalist and hawk. Mystifying.”
