Mises, Mecca, and Medina

A reader of my article, “Mises on Islam,” reminded me that Mohammad is buried in the city of Medina, not Mecca, as Mises states on page 44 of his book Planned Chaos: “Just as the pious Muslim yearns for a piligrimage to the Prophet’s tomb at Mecca, so the communist intellectual deems a pilgrimage to the holy shrines of Moscow as the event of his life.” Mises was half right. Mohammad was born in Mecca. These cities are the two holiest cities to a Muslim. Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca, but not to see Mohammad’s tomb.
