Let Me Spell It Out

A boycott supporter instructs me that I do not understand boycotts. His message is this: “It is about money. A boycott puts pressure on the firms who are in partnership with the government. I like Amazon.com also, but they too are partnered with the government. The boycott punishes firms who choose government welfare over market wants, and what the market wants is freedom from government.”

IT IS ABOUT MONEY. What is IT? The Assange affair is about money? No it is not about money.

A boycott is about money, though. It does pressure firms. The extent of government partnering is beside the main points.

They are (1) Assange. (2) His attack on government secrecy. (3) By extension, his attack on government. (4) Due process of law or his rights. There are also deeper issues of law and government that Assange has raised that I won’t go into at this point.

These companies could not seek out havens of government power if that power were denied government, nor could the government control them without its power. The point is GOVERNMENT POWER.

So boycotting Amazon and PayPal or attacking them by computer focusses on the wrong targets.
