In modern governments, that is. This is the theme of one of the chapters of F.A. Hayek’s classic, The Road to Serfdom. I’ll be teaching a five-week online course on “The Road to Serfdom: Despotism Then and Now,” under the auspices of the Mises Academy. The first class is next Tuesday, June 21.
One year ago The Road to Serfdom rose to #1 in sales on Amazon.com after Glenn Beck discussed the book (with our friends Yuri Maltsev and Tom Woods) on his television program. This happened because of how effective Tom and Yuri were in very briefly explaining how the book explains the nature of despotism in Hayek’s time and in ours, and provides a roadmap on what to do about it. The course will be an in-depth discussion of all of Hayek’s themes, along with some supplemental online readings from classical liberal (libertarian/free market) literature.
