While Lady Obama is busy sprinkling her political dust on the food front in the “war” against obesity, no troops are being left behind. The Washington Post and New York Times have reported on the story that food fascism has come to the military (although they don’t actually report it that way):
Military bases will soon be serving more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dishes under the first program in 20 years to improve nutrition standards across the armed services.
…“When our service members make healthy eating a priority in their lives, the rest of us are more likely to make it a priority in our lives,” she said in a written statement. “Simply put, this is America’s entire military once again stepping forward to lead by example.”
Of course, obesity is a “national security issue.” And any issue of national security must be dealt with swiftly, and via sweeping government mandates. The NYT reported this quote from the First Lady of Lowfat:
“Thank you for eating your vegetables,” she told airmen at a mess hall in Little Rock, Ark., as several stared guiltily into half-eaten plates of broccoli. “We need you strong.”
