Krugman Calls Ron Paul a ‘Spendthrift’

Paul Krugman, the same Paul Krugman who has called for a “clever lawyer” to find a way to make it legal for the Fed to directly purchase short-term government bonds so the government can access to an endless supply of printed money, has declared that Ron Paul is a “spendthrift.” Now, Dr. Paul has been called a lot of things, but I must admit that this one is something new — and utterly stupid.

Krugman claims that since Dr. Paul’s proposals for cutting federal spending are unrealistic. After attacking the other three Republicans in his “Four Fiscal Phonies” column, Krugman writes:

Ron Paul would do better, roughly matching Mr. Obama (in the proposed budgets). But if you look at the details, it turns out that Mr. Paul is assuming trillions of dollars in unspecified and implausible spending cuts. So, in the end, he’s really a spendthrift, too.

Having read Dr. Paul’s proposals, I definitely would not call them “unspecified.” When Krugman claims they are “implausible,” he is saying that Washington does not want to give up its gravy train, and even Krugman has been claiming that government spending is not a burden to the economy, but rather is the main factor in preventing economic collapse. So, I only could imagine the howls of anger and terror that would come from Krugman’s column and the NY Times editorial page if Ron Paul actually were elected president. All the more reason to elect him!
