Lew, I don’t know where Bachmann — along with far too many other Americans — get the idea that the Bill of Rights apply only to Americans and not foreigners. The Fifth Amendment begins with the proposition that “No person” shall be subject to a variety of state offenses; the Fourth Amendment speaks of “The right of the people to be secure. . . ” These provisions do not say “No American citizen,” or “The right of American citizens . . .” While I do not place any confidence in the Constitution to restrain governmental power, I can at least read what the words say!
By the way, if, in the opinion of these nitwits, foreigners have no “rights,” why is the United States fighting in various Middle East countries allegedly to extend “democracy,” or to protect the “rights” of their residents? If Iraqis, Iranians, Libyans, et. al. are not worthy of constitutional protections when held by the United States, why should there be any concern when foreigners are denied similar ”rights” by their own rulers?
