Justice By Any Other Name?

It appearing that Sonia Sotomayor is about to become the latest member of the U.S. Supreme Court, the media’s continuing emphasis is on her being the first Hispanic to sit on that court. Why is that at all relevant? If, as the mantra intones, we are “a society of laws, not men,” what possible consideration should race, nationality, gender, religion, ethnicity, etc., have in the selection process? Might this be an unconscious recognition that the mantra has always been a truckload of bull-feathers?
