Jazz Birthday: Ralph Sutton (1922)

Jazz musicians raised the freedom to improvise, individually and in groups, to new heights and ran with it.

Ralph Sutton was a highly-regarded piano master in the stride tradition of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. He put in an eight year stint at Condon’s in Greenwich Village. Here he plays Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose”, several early recordings, and “Undecided”. His birthday was November 4.
