Jim Foy, long-time dean of students at Auburn University and a great friend to the Mises Institute and LRC, died at the age of 93 on October 9, 2010. The Dean was was a charming and smart man, and had an unfailingly bright outlook on life. His energy even in his 80s was an astonishing thing to behold. He loved to golf (and was annoyed when any course insisted that he use a cart rather than run between holes) and he won national senior skiing contests in his 70s. He enjoyed attending Mises Institute events and especially meeting our students, as did his late wife of 60 years, Emmalu. In fact, we have an Emmalu Foy Scholarship. In times when greatness is identified with political power on the national stage, Jim’s life provides us with a more authentic model of what greatness really means: personal character and dedication to excellence in every area of life. May he rest in peace.
