Israel To Honor War Criminals

The country that is the only democracy in the Middle East—except, of course, to the Palestinians—is about to honor one of the great rapists (and U.S. allies) of the 20th century: The Russian Army of World War II.* When I read about things like this being done by the only democracy in the Middle East, I am reminded of a great saying by the late Israeli writer Israel Shahak, “The Nazis made me afraid to be a Jew, and the Israelis make me ashamed to be a Jew.”

As someone who was born and raised Jewish, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

*While they’re at it, perhaps the Israelis can honor the Russian Army’s post-World War II actions in Hungary and Czechoslovakia too. And let’s not forget the Soviet NKVD during World War II.

UPDATE: And, of course, the Russian Army’s honorable behavior during the Warsaw Uprising. [HT to Lawson Clark]
