National sports — in Norway it’s cross-country skiing, in Lithuania it’s basketball, in Cuba it’s baseball, and in America it is “being offended.” Everywhere you go, someone is offended by something that has nothing whatsoever to do with them. Yet they whine and gripe and voice their petty complaints about insignificant things, and mostly, it’s to hold up the mantle of political correctness. Intolerance is a hate crime, and in the public schools, tolerance is the prevailing religion.
It seems that Ole Miss (University of Mississippi) has a fight song where the students enter a chanting phase and chant “the South will rise again!” University administrators, alumni, and members of the student body are horrified because it is an “offensive reminder of the region’s intolerant past.” Immediately, such a chant is said to be a call for the revival of slavery. One black student likens the short chant to the “slave mentality.” So the song has been shortened to eliminate the sassy lyrics.
The University of Mississippi has shortened one of its fight songs to discourage football fans from chanting “the South will rise again” during part of the tune, which critics say is an offensive reminder of the region’s intolerant past.
However, some fans have continued to recite the chant at the end of the song, “From Dixie With Love,” despite the change made last week at the chancellor’s request. The Ole Miss band performs the medley before and after games.
Earlier this month, the Ole Miss student government passed a resolution suggesting the chant be replaced by the phrase, “To hell with LSU.”
Former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale, an Ole Miss alumnus, is one of the guys whining about the un-pc chant. As a large donor to the university, you think he might have some influence? Read the whole story and note the assorted namby-pamby reactions and comments from the reactionary cupcake crowd. Yes, we are a nation of crybaby jackasses. Thanks to Barrett Marvin for the story.
