Writes Roland Walkenhorst:
11:20 am on June 24, 2010We thought it would never end. No, not Iraq or Afghanistan. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut just finished their first-round match at Wimbledon, with Isner taking the fifth set, 70-68. The 11-hour-plus contest spanned three days.
What an incredible display of individual accomplishment and stamina! But, predictably, as Isner waved to the crowd, a chant of “USA! USA!” (barely noticeable, thank goodness) could be heard.
Oh, that’s right; I forgot: If it weren’t for the American state, the terrorists would have taken away Isner’s right to play tennis long ago. And don’t you forget it!
BTW, I have a first-round match in a local tournament at 8:30 tomorrow. I expect to be home well before midnight.
