I saw a bumper-sticker on a car today containing a picture of Obama with what appeared to be a halo behind him. Later in the day, a liberal acquaintance referred to Obama as “the Messiah,” although she insisted it was meant in humor.
For all their other moronic shortcomings, I never heard conservatives speak of the departed George Bush as a deity. Many of them wanted Bush to embrace their religious programs, and the man often referred to himself as God’s choice for president. But it has taken the Democratic liberals – who enjoyed chastising the “religious right” for its excesses – to elevate Barack Obama to the realm of the gods. “Le Roi Soleil,” Louis XIV dubbed himself. With what mantle shall Mr. Obama now cloak himself?
As goofy as the likes of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell often revealed themselves to be, a president transformed into a pharaoh is a far more troubling phenomenon in American politics.
