Howard Kurtz vs. Michael Jackson

This morning, the CNN-WaPo commentator Howard Kurtz was complaining about too much coverage of the death of Michael Jackson. Why, it left insufficient time to glorify US wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, or to promote a future US war on Iran. There, in an establishment nutshell, is the official view: all media exist to serve the state and promote its killing and looting. How dare regular people be interested in something else, and generate market pressure on the media to cater to them? I remember similar bitter complaints from the power elite during the mourning of Princess Diana. In such events we can see reflected, in the dimmest of ways, what an anti-state change in the climate of opinion might look like.
