How Safe Is It To Be a Congressman?

Among the many thousands of congressmen since the present government got going, and leaving aside the Arizona horror and the congressman killed in an 1838 duel with another congressmen, one congressman was murdered in 1979—along with 900 other people—by the Rev. Jim Jones of the People’s Temple, and four were wounded in 1954 by advocates of Puerto Rican independence—another incident almost never discussed. For fear of causing unrest in the US colony, Eisenhower commuted the shooters’ death sentences, and Carter freed them, in exchange for Castro freeing some CIA agents. Other CIA agents had tried and failed, perhaps 638 times, to murder Castro.
