Hookdathunkitt?!? The Highest End of Government Is To Tell Us What To Eat!

Rudy Giuliani was rightly accused of abusing power and engaging in police state measures when he was mayor of New York City, but it seems that his successor has expanded mayoral fascism into what we eat. Because Progressives believe that the expansion of the State is the soul of human progress, Michael Bloomberg gets a free pass for his fascism.

Bloomberg’s latest foray into fascism comes with his declaration that government’s highest and most important activity is to determine what we should and should not be eating. Lest you think I am joking, Bloomberg recently told the UN General Assembly:

There are powers only governments can exercise, policies only governments can mandate and enforce and results only governments can achieve. To halt the worldwide epidemic of non-communicable diseases, governments at all levels must make healthy solutions the default social option. That is ultimately government’s highest duty.

Earlier, Bloomberg had explained that “healthy solutions” meant government issuing mandates about food. The thing to remember about this is that government under this worldview is permitted — indeed, encouraged — to do whatever is necessary to enforce its food edicts. This worldview holds that government, and only government, truly can know what is a “healthy choice” and what is not.

I realize that it is fashionable to throw around words like “fascism” or “Nazi” or “Hitler,” yet we have to remember that while Progressive historians might concentrate on Hitler’s anti-semitism and the Holocaust, Nazism was not just about the government officially hating Jews. It also was about reconstructing German society along what could be termed “Progressive” lines. Yes, Hitler was a health nut and wanted to promote healthy eating and everything else, and in his view, anything government did to enforce such viewpoints was legitimate. By the way, until Michael Bloomberg came along, there was no more virulent anti-tobacco politician than Adolph Hitler.

How is that different than having the government send SWAT teams after an Amish farmer for selling raw milk? How is that different than the FDA going after walnut growers? In fact, I would say that Nazism and the Progressives, when it comes to food, are pretty much the same. Yes, I know that people will accuse me of being extreme here, but we need to look at the facts. When the mayor of New York City tells world politicians that Progressive governments must be the sole determiners of what is permitted to be eaten, then the difference between Progressivism and Nazism is one of degrees and only degrees.
