Hitler Lives

This Academy Award winning documentary short, Hitler Lives, is an excellent example of post-WWII, pre-Cold War propaganda. The target is a revitalized and aggressive Germany, not an expansionist and totalitarian Soviet Union. It is very effectively produced, incorporating a powerful emotional narrative with many searing images familiar to theater audiences of the day who had been exposed to Frank Capra’s celebrated Why We Fight series. The strident tone and delivery (as if by a George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, or Barack Obama) is often seen in today’s War Party propaganda efforts produced by the Department of Homeland Security, substituting Muslims and the Koran for the Germans. It is neo-conservatism in a nutshell, portraying the ever-present danger of a new Adolf Hitler coming upon the immediate horizon, and the spurious necessity for the American empire’s global presence (particularly in NATO Europe) in forcefully leading the liberating forces of humanity to that millennial Shining City Upon a Hill depicted in the conclusion.
