I was in Washington this week and met the son of a friend of mine, an undergraduate student at George Mason University in Virginia. He’s required this spring semester to take Intro to American History, and was looking forward to it — that is, he was, until his teacher announced the theme for the course.
The teacher, who belongs to a minority that is eminently qualified for affirmative action preference in university hiring and promotion, is going to spend the entire semester discussing Obama, apparently because “his election is so historic.”
I intend to keep in touch with the lad, and want to recommend to him some works that might actually teach him something about American History. I have a few in mind; if anyone has any suggestions for additional ingredients in that reading list, please advise.2:37 pm on January 24, 2009 Email Christopher Manion
