Heroism in Japan

We are hearing about some genuine heroes in Japan, namely, the persons who are bravely accepting radiation while trying to control the nuclear piles. Sacrifice, even to the point of death, is inside human beings too, and a noble characteristic it is. Altruism, a selfless concern for the welfare of others, is inside us too. One can go to one’s death knowing that one has acted honorably or done some good for others. If these courageous workers save lives, even preventing deaths and cancers as far away as America, we should recognize them. It is a shame when this fine and heroic trait is exploited by military forces making war on others. The contrast between their actions and the cowardly and self-serving acts of those who are manning the corporativist state could not be more stark.
