The Greek Government Likes My Idea

For the past year, I’ve been asked by people on Facebook threads how to bring about a voluntaryist society. My answer is that it is not going to happen in the United States of Socialist America. I then go on to explain that although for years voluntaryists have toyed with the idea of obtaining a remote uninhabited island or perhaps a floating nation on a cruise ship, an island at the end of the world or perpetually sailing around the world may not be every voluntaryist’s cup of tea. I thought: “Why not a group of voluntaryists buy land in an economically distressed country such as Spain, Italy, or even France? After all, France already has two small tax havens occupying its borders: Monaco and Andorra. Andorra also borders on Spain. Italy has tax haven Campione and non-tax haven San Marino.”

I guess the seriously economically-distressed Greek government must have heard about my idea because they are now preparing to sell or lease one of the 6,000 Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Though they are islands, they are not remote islands at the end of the world. (It’s not clear if the island one buys still falls under the control of the Greek government, but I’m sure if it did one could probably convince the government to allow one to secede.)

I could think of a lot worse places to live than here.
