Government: Steroids Good, Vegetables Bad

Steroid-feeding industrial CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) that have massive environmental impacts, human health consequences, and violate all standards of care and welfare for animals are heartily endorsed by the governments that helped to create them. But let a small farmer family in Missouri try to feed their animals organic vegetables and cheese-making byproducts, and that is considered to be “garbage” and therefore illegal. This is because feeding vegetables to pigs is considered to be “garbage feeding” in Missouri due to some esoteric law written over fifty years ago. In order to feed the pigs vegetables, the Reuters – Eric and Joanna – would have to get a permit to exempt them from the law and allow for government inspections throughout the year. As is often the case, there are some good comments from readers. I love the comment from Richard Saunders on July 22nd:

The real swine in this case are the criminals in cheap suits who control the lives of others allegedly to save us from ourselves while growing fat off of the public purse. That people willingly submit to this subhuman treatment is the real problem here. Legislators and their enforcement mechanism are nothing but a gang masquerading as public service. Of course, it is obvious who is being served here.
