Government Schools Teach People to Hate Freedom

I’ve had at least a thousand times more fan mail than hate mail in relation to my book and some 50 LRC articles on Lincoln, and the hate mail is usually from ignoramuses. The real cowards gossip about us on FreeRepublic or some other quasi-fascist Web site. One such character who goes by the name of “Walt,” a proud Lincoln/FDR/Clinton lover, has called me every foul name in the book on the Web, but when he had a chance to address me in person at a speech I gave at the Libraryof Virginia in Richmond he literally ran away like a rabbit (or chicken) that was being chased by a fox. Like Karen and the others, I delete most of this mail because it is from cowardly ignoramuses like “Walt” who are miserable people who have no life and get their kicks by spewing venom on the internet.

However, not all hate mailers are in the pathetic Walt category. In almost 25 years of writing for popular (as well as academic) audiences, and receiving thousands upon thousands of letters and emails in response, it is clear to me that there are many Americans who have been programmed to hate capitalism, freedom and individualism. This is a testament to the spectacular success of the government-run schools in inculcating the hatred of freedom in the minds of the American Sheeple. Those of us who advocate private property, free trade, free markets, and the superiority of the civil society over the state will always be the targets of hate mail by brainwashed collectivists which, unfortunately, is a huge — and growing — proportion of the American population. No one should be surprised that the government schools teach young people to hate freedom and love their bureaucratic masters.
