Government as Piracy

Phil: Good question. There is some very thoughtful analysis suggesting that political systems arose out of piracy and banditry – on both the high seas and landed trade routes – that the thieves later became weary of chasing down their prey and institutionalized their activities by requiring the victims to pass through ports of entry, etc.

Perhaps this latest incident will serve to deplete the ranks of the boobeoise by stripping away any meaningful distinctions between acts of murder, theft, etc., practiced by recognized thugs, and those done in the name of the “general welfare.”
