Gabriel Winant of Salon.com Is a Liar

In the article about Tom Woods and me at CPAC one Gabriel Winant (a “freelance writer and graduate student who lives in London” according to his online bio) lies when he says that I claim the only reason Lincoln invaded the Southern states was that he was a “godless heathen.”  I did not say that at CPAC, and have never said or written it anywhere else.  I did discuss why Lincoln invaded  the South during my speech by quoting his first inaugural address, where he unambiguously threatened an invasion of any state that failed to collect the newly-doubled tariff tax, and then followed through with his threat.  Why wouldn’t this libeling hack  mention this while writing about my views on why Lincoln invaded?

This person, who knows nothing about me, claims I have spent “the better part” of my career criticizing Lincoln.  Well, this is my thirtieth year as a university professor, and my first book on Lincoln was published eight years ago.  I researched and published on other topics for the previous 22 years, and wrote two other books on non-Lincoln topics since 2002.  “Salon” should change its name to “Smearlon.”
