FreedomFest Revived My Inner Anarchist

Writes Steve Cross:

I went to “Freedom Fest” in Las Vegas 2 years ago, which coincided with a C4L gathering of Ron Paul supporters. Overall, it was pretty good, despite only limited participation by Mises folks (Tom Woods). It was obvious early on that there is a decided difference between “conservatives” of the neocon stripe (Heritage Foundation, TAS), “supply-siders” (Kudlow, Steve Moore, Steve Forbes), “libertarians” (Cato, Reason, etc.), and the few who are really anti-state. Mark Skousen, who organizes the yearly confab, was recently interviewed and actually said that Ron Paul was “too extreme” and that Romney might be the best candidate! This is a guy who touts himself as a “libertarian”?

There were a few testy exchanges in the general meetings between Ron Paul supporters and Ed Feulner that showed the differences between  modern-day conservatives and those of us who realize that “moderation in defense of liberty is no virtue” (to quote Goldwater). But the conference DID pull me back toward my “inner anarchist” view that had been dormant for years (Ron Paul was my Congressman for many years in Texas and I supported his 1988 POTUS bid), so for that it was worthwhile.
