Footnoting a “Him”

It is more and more common for journals, especially in leftist or PC fields like law, to insist on gender neutral language. In a law review article I published in 1997, I insisted on using the masculine form as generic. They grudgingly agreed, but actually dropped a disclaimer footnote on the first use of “him”. It’s a bit funny, a bit pathetic. See note 27 to this article, which reads: “It is the general policy of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review to use gender-neutral language. The author, however, has chosen not to conform to this policy.”
