Faith-Based Welfarism

Norman’s post is all too timely, and the situation he describes was all too predictable. People on the LRC website were pointing out at the beginning that this was a bad idea, and that taking the state’s money ultimately would mean that the state would be interfering with the larger mission of these religious groups.

Catholic Charities has been taking government money for years, and while the organization does some good things (my wife used to work for them and I appreciated some of the things Catholic Charities did), there is no doubt that the government also has tried to use that as a wedge to force Catholics to go against their beliefs. One would think that the evangelicals would have seen the problem but, no, their response was to demand some of the booty for themselves. A sad commentary on the present state of evangelicalism.
